Are you considering starting a freelance business or another entrepreneurial journey? Maybe you’ve already started and just need some encouragement, tips, or insight. As an entrepreneur myself, I’m sharing a few podcasts and some specific episodes that I’ve found to be invaluable over the last few years.
The Live Free Podcast
One of my all-time favorites is Micala Quinns podcast, “The Live Free Podcast”
Micala Quinn is a former high school English teacher who, after having her first baby, wanted to be able to make an income from home. She started a freelance business working as a virtual assistant, surpassing her income as a teacher and now teaches others how to do the same.
I’ve been listening to her podcast since 2018, and while there are numerous episodes that I’ve found to be incredibly helpful, I’ll just share my top favorites here:
The Framework to Help You Conquer Your Fear of Starting (Your Freelance Business)
In this episode, Micala goes into the framework and strategies she uses to conquer the fear around starting a freelance business, and how to stop letting it take control in your life in general. She exemplifies that you can be successful with freelancing while getting fear out of the way.
Which Comes First, the Skills or the Clients?
You may be thinking, sure starting a freelancing side hustle might be great, but I don’t have any skills. What could I possibly do? How do I get clients if I don’t have any experience, and how do I gain experience without having clients?
In this episode, Micala goes over how you can use your existing skills in your freelance business (even if you feel like you don’t have any). She talks about what you can do when you come across a job opportunity that looks like it has a lot of qualifications to meet, and how she can help you get started freelancing right away.
How to Handle the “What’s Your Experience” Question
This is a question most beginner freelancers dread. You finally have a potential client wanting to connect with you, and during your discovery call, they ask about your previous experience. The truth is you don’t have much experience working as a freelancer if any at all. So how can you answer this? In this podcast, Micala breaks down how you can confidently answer this question without being deceitful, but still assuring the client that you are equipped to do the job. This is an episode you won’t want to miss out on if you’re serious about freelancing.
Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast
The Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast by Amy Porterfield is a classic. I stumbled across an episode of Amy’s podcast back in 2016, and that is when I knew I needed to start an online business. Her content is so great. She’s been in the online space for over fourteen years, so you know she speaks from experience, not just theory. While you’d do yourself good to follow Amy on a regular basis, I’m sharing just a few of my favorite episodes here.
How to Set (and Enforce) Boundaries as an Entrepreneur
In this episode, Amy talks about the importance of having boundaries for a healthy business/life balance. She explains that resentment is a sign that you need more boundaries. She also provides tips and insight for setting those boundaries. As a natural people pleaser, this is an episode I find myself coming back to when I need a little encouragement for setting strong boundaries.
Exclusive Sneak Peek: A Chapter From Two Weeks Notice (Amy’s Book)
In addition to her podcast, Amy recently published a book, Two Weeks Notice. I haven’t personally read her book yet, but this expert is highly motivating for anyone looking to quit their 9-5 and make an income working as an online entrepreneur.
Hindsight is 20/20: 3 Things I Wish I Did When I First Started Out
Coming from someone who’s been in the online space for more than 14 years and has built a multi-million dollar business, here are 3 things Amy said she’d do differently if she was just starting out in her business.
Other Notable Podcasts for Entrepreneurship
While there are so many great podcasts out there for entrepreneurship and becoming an online business owner, here are a few more of my personal favorites. “The Marie Forleo Podcast”, the “Mind Your Business Podcast” with James Wedmore, and “The School of Greatness” with Lewis Howes.
