There is something a little ironic about the fact that women make up about 75% of true crime podcast listeners when women are also the likely victims of said crimes. Maybe it’s the desire to know why we are the victims or the idea that listening to these podcasts will make us somehow prepared if a situation ever happened.
I’m not sure but I’m definitely down for everything true crime any time. Here is a rundown of a few of my favorite podcasts hosted by women.
7. National Park After Dark
About the Hosts
This podcast is hosted by two friends that bonded over their mutual love for the outdoors — including everything that could go wrong while exploring it.
Both of the hosts grew up in New England and they both realized their love for the outdoors at a young age through family vacations.
About the Podcast
I absolutely love visiting National Parks and I am one of those weirdos that insist on listening to podcasts about all things that can go wrong while I’m out in the wilderness with no cell phone signal and limited equipment. As a matter of fact, i’s exactly how I stumbled upon National Park After Dark.
The great thing about this podcast is that it is lised as a true crime podcast, but many of the episodes simply touch on the tragic historic events that took place in them.
Listening to theis podcast will have you triple-check your surroundings while your exploring the great outdoors.
6. Tenfold More Wicked presents: Wicked Words
About the Host
Is there anything that Kate Winkler Dawson can’t do? No, seriously, she has to be one of the best true crime investigative journalists to ever do it.
According to her LinkedIn, she is a senior lecturer at the University of Texas Belo School of New Media and a non-fiction writer of historical narratives.
About the Podcast
This podcast is described as “a unique blend of narrative, nonfiction, true crime storytelling with in-depth interviewing.”
Kate Winkler Dawsons interviews the journalists, writers, and filmmakers about their true crime stories. She interviews the filmmakers who investigated the Long Island Serial Killer, the author who wrote a book about the Lie Detector Test, and the forensic psychologist that spent years learning the mind of the BTK killer.
Think of this podcast as the story behind the story.
5. Moms and Mysteries
About the Hosts
Mandy and Melissa met at a mom group and bonded over their interest of true crime. These ladies are both just busy moms who choose to stay low-key and keep their names out of the spotlight. Their chill personalities still keep you engaged in each episode.
About the Podcast
This podcast is as G-rated as it gets in the true crime world. These lovely ladies make it a point to steer clear from any cases involving kids and deliver that isn’t too gory for the little ears that may be around. Even though these ladies choose to keep the podcast light, the stories are still at the top of my list.
4. And That’s Why We Drink
About the Hosts
Em Schulz (pronouns: they/them) and Christine Schiefer (pronouns: she/her) started ‘And That’s Why We Drink’ back in 2017. This duo met in grad school, happened to move to LA separately and bonded over all things gore.
These hosts now live in separate states but still make it a priority to continue the podcast as if they are in the same room.
About the Podcast
This paranormal and true crime podcast will have you shaking in your boots after one episode. My personal favorites are the episodes called “Listener Stories” which feature stories that listeners of the podcast write in that chills you right to the bone.
While the topics of their podcast may seem grim and dreary, I guarantee that you will feel like you are a friend after listening to any episode. Em and Christine have a way of making you feel right at home by taking the time to lighten the mood at the beginning and end of each podcast episode.
3. Crime Junkie
About the Hosts
Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat are old childhood friends that know how to get you hooked on a story. Both Ashley and Brit have been true crime obsessed for as long as they can remember.
Ashley is now the Founder and CEO audiochuck, the podcast network that Crime Junkie is a part of. She was working in software sales when she decided to pursue her true passion and started the podcast back in late 2017.
Brit, on the other hand, worked for a PI for a while, which seems to help her ask all the right questions on the podcast. While she may not have a presence as big as her co-host, her calming voice and curious interjections are a vital part to this podcast.
About the Podcast
If you like a podcast with a little bit more structure, then Crime Junkie is for you. This podcast mostly sticks to the script but still feels genuine with Brit joining in and asking questions we may all be thinking at just the right time.
This podcast is extremely well written with research being meticulously cited. Ashley and Brit make it a point to stick to the facts, but they do it in a way that doesn’t bore you and make you feel like you are listening to a reporting drone on.
If you like your information backed by credible resources then this is the podcast for you.
2. My Favorite Murder
About the Hosts
Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff are a duo that is funny without even trying. These two comedy queens discovered their shared obsession with true crime at a Halloween party and went on to create “My Favorite Murder” the comedy true crime podcast.
About the Podcast
My Favorite Murder puts a comedic spin on true crime without disgracing anything along the way. Georgia and Karen each take a turn telling a chilling story on each episode of this podcast. Their banter at the beginning of each podcast will fill you with laughs before taking dive into the world of true crime.
1. Morbid – A True Crime Podcast
About the Hosts
Alaina Urquhart and Ash Kelley are an aunt and niece duo who were raised more like sisters and it shows. These spunky hosts hail from Massachusetts and they bring all of their New England charm and humor to the podcast.
When they aren’t researching true crime, Alaina works as an autopsy technician and Ash, a hair stylist. While these two may seem like polar opposites, their personalities mesh like no other. No seriously, you will feel like you are hanging out with one of your friends by the time you’re done listening to one episode.
About the Podcast
This is a true crime podcast that occasionally creeps into the world of ‘spooky’. Alaina and Ash take turns telling stories of the missing, murdered, and stories that just straight up give you the creeps. Alaina’s in-depth research makes sure that listeners don’t miss a detail while Ash’s witty comments keep you on your toes.
